The Experiment: AI vs. Human Blog Writing

We published 120 blog posts across 4 months with a controlled test:

  • 40 posts: 100% AI-generated (ChatGPT 4)
  • 40 posts: Human-written with AI editing
  • 40 posts: 100% human-written (no AI)

Tracked over 6 months. Here’s what happened.

The Core Results

Average Performance by Content Type

Metric Pure AI AI-Assisted Human Only
Avg. ranking (Google) Page 3 (position 28) Page 1-2 (position 11) Page 1 (position 6)
Avg. bounce rate 68% 52% 44%
Avg. time on page 1m 12s 2m 34s 3m 18s
Conversion rate 0.8% 2.1% 3.2%

Translation:

  • Pure AI content ranks 3-4 positions lower than human content
  • Pure AI has 54% higher bounce rate
  • Pure AI converts 75% worse

Why Pure AI Fails

1. Google Detects AI Content (It’s Getting Better)

Google released AI detection improvements in March 2024. Our data:

Before March 2024:

  • AI-generated posts ranked normally
  • Detection wasn’t explicit penalty

After March 2024:

  • AI-detected posts dropped 3-5 positions
  • Bounce rates spiked
  • Rankings recovered only with human editing + republish

Current data (Oct 2024 - Now):

  • Google still ranks pure AI lower
  • But trend: “AI is OK if it adds value”

2. Reader Behavior: Humans Bounce on AI

We tested via heat mapping and scroll depth:

Pure AI posts:

  • 68% bounce rate
  • Most readers leave after 10 seconds
  • No shares

Why? Readers said (via exit surveys):

  • “Sounds robotic” (34%)
  • “Generic, like every other article” (29%)
  • “No new information” (18%)
  • “Doesn’t sound like a real person” (12%)

3. AI Makes Predictable Mistakes (And Repeats Them)

We analyzed common failures across our 40 AI posts:

Error Type Frequency
Over-explaining obvious concepts 92% of posts
Starting 3+ paragraphs identically 84%
No specific examples (generic only) 78%
Hallucinated statistics 34%
Contradictory statements 28%

Example of AI over-explaining: The AI post spent 200 words explaining “what is SEO” before getting to the actual topic (how to use SEO for blogs). Human posts skipped this—readers already know.

Example of hallucinated data: AI claimed “73% of marketers use ChatGPT for content.” We checked: The stat doesn’t exist. It invented it.

What Actually Works: AI-Assisted Writing

The Winning Formula (Our 40 “AI-Assisted” Posts)

These posts averaged:

  • Position 11 on Google (vs. 28 for pure AI)
  • 2.1% conversion rate (vs. 0.8% for pure AI)
  • 2m 34s time on page (vs. 1m 12s for pure AI)

Process:

  1. Human writes rough draft (30 min) - covers topic, adds personal experience
  2. ChatGPT edits for clarity (5 min) - fixes grammar, restructures awkward sentences
  3. Human rewrites AI edits (10 min) - ensures voice remains human, adds specific data
  4. Fact-check AI suggestions (5 min) - verify any statistics or claims ChatGPT added

Total time: 50 minutes (vs. 5 minutes for pure AI, but produces 250% better results)

Real Example: The AI-Assisted Post That Ranked #6

Topic: “How to Use LinkedIn for B2B Sales”

What human wrote (rough):

“LinkedIn is good for B2B sales. You need a profile, post content, engage with prospects. I’ve done this at 3 companies and it works.”

What ChatGPT suggested (editing):

“LinkedIn is essential for B2B sales strategy. Optimization includes profile positioning, consistent content cadence, and strategic prospect engagement. This approach has proven effective across enterprise organizations.”

What human did:

  1. ✅ Kept the personal voice (“I’ve done this at 3 companies”)
  2. ✅ Added the specific fact: “enterprise organizations” → “Specifically, I’ve seen 40-60% sales engagement rates with consistent posting”
  3. ✅ Rejected “cadence” (too corporate); used “weekly or bi-weekly posts”
  4. ✅ Added data: Cited LinkedIn’s own 2024 B2B report showing 61% engagement rate from personal profiles

Final version sound: Human, specific, data-backed

Result:

  • Ranked position 6 for target keyword
  • 3m 42s average time on page
  • 4.7% conversion rate
  • 28 backlinks (6 months)

When Pure AI Actually Works

We identified 3 scenarios where pure AI performed well:

1. News Aggregation (AI: 85% success)

Posts that summarize recent news + add minimal analysis.

  • Example: “5 AI Tools Released This Week”
  • Why it works: No need for deep insight; readers want speed
  • Ranking: Still lower than human, but acceptable for news

2. How-To Guides with Clear Steps (AI: 72% success)

Step-by-step guides with no judgment calls.

  • Example: “How to Set Up Google Analytics”
  • Why it works: Steps are objective; less “voice” needed
  • Limitation: Doesn’t differentiate from 10,000 other identical guides

3. Product Reviews (AI: 68% success)

Comparing features of well-known tools.

  • Example: “Slack vs. Teams: Feature Comparison”
  • Why it works: Features are documented; less creative input needed
  • Limitation: Lacks personality; fewer shares

This one surprised us. Backlinks (shares from other sites) correlate strongly with content origin:

  • Human-only posts: 14.2 average backlinks (6 months)
  • AI-assisted posts: 8.7 average backlinks
  • Pure AI posts: 2.3 average backlinks

Why? People link to content that feels authentic, has unique perspective, or adds new information. Pure AI content lacks all three.

Reader Comments: The Honest Feedback

We left comments enabled on all 120 posts. Comment patterns:

Pure AI posts:

  • 0.3 comments per post average
  • Comments were often sarcastic (“I’m sure you wrote this” - 12 instances)
  • No substantive discussion

Human posts:

  • 4.2 comments per post average
  • 67% were substantive questions or discussions
  • Readers engaged with ideas

The SEO Implication: E-E-A-T

Google’s ranking factor: E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness)

Pure AI scores low on E (Experience):

  • No author bio with real experience
  • Generic advice (could apply to anyone)
  • No personal story

Human-written posts score high:

  • Author has credentials
  • Real examples from their work
  • Specific perspective

The Honest Assessment

Where AI Excels

✅ Speed: Generate 80% of content in 5% of time
✅ Consistency: Structured, grammatically correct
✅ Breadth: Cover many topics quickly

Where AI Fails

❌ Originality: Sounds like 1000 other AI posts
❌ Depth: No real insight or experience
❌ Authority: No credibility signals
❌ SEO: Google penalizes detected AI content

  • Ranking: Mediocre

For Strategic Content (SEO, Conversion)

Use: Human write → AI edit → Human rewrite

  • Time: 50 min
  • Quality: High

Use: Human write, minimal AI editing

  • Time: 90 min
  • Quality: Highest
  • Ranking: Best

The Numbers Don’t Lie

If you’re optimizing for:

  • Rankings: 6 human posts beat 40 AI posts (in our test)
  • Backlinks: Same
  • Conversion: Same
  • Reader engagement: Same

If you’re optimizing for:

  • Volume: AI wins (40 posts in same time)
  • Cost: AI wins ($0 vs. $5K in freelancer costs)
  • Speed: AI wins

Choose your metric. Choose your approach.

We chose: Mix of both. 60% AI-assisted (posts that rank), 40% pure AI (high volume).

Your Next Step

Test it yourself:

  1. Write one post 100% yourself (90 min)
  2. Write one post 100% via ChatGPT (5 min)
  3. Publish both, same channel
  4. Compare metrics after 8 weeks
  5. See what actually happens with YOUR audience

Don’t trust our data—verify with your traffic, rankings, conversions.

That’s the only metric that matters anyway.
